More an observer than an activist, Antonis Pittas explores topics such as safety and control, economic crises and acts of resistance, violence, and vandalism. For the artist, an important frame of reference is the visual language of modernism and the historical avant-gardes, including Bauhaus, De Stijl and Russian Constructivism. Forms from this period are traced throughout history as they travel to unlikely situations, attaining new shapes and meanings. He maps their transhistorical lines of development and investigates how they re-appear in the present. His research-based approach is informed by the idea that utopian aspirations can easily turn into their opposite, leading to destruction, oppression, and an affirmation of power and authority.
Antonis Pittas studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts, the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and at the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam. He has followed an artist-in- residence at the Van Doesburghuis in Paris and the Bard College in Annandale, New York. Antonis has had solo exhibitions at Van Doesburg House, Paris (2019); Significant Other, Vienna AT (2019); Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam (2018); Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen (2017); Narrative Projects, London (2016); Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Prague (2016); Stedelijk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam (2015); De Nederlandsche Bank, Amsterdam (2013); Hessel Museum of Art & CSS Bard Galleries, New York (2012); Benaki Museum, Athens (2011); Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven (2011).
